John Borling - Republican

A 63-year-old Rockford businessman, John Borling is a former Air Force major general -- the only current GOP candidate for senate to have served in the military. He is a former POW and an avid pilot who flies to many of his campaign appearances (although, bad weather kept him from landing at his campaign kick-off event in Chicago over Labor Day).

Although he claims to be a fiscal conservative and a social moderate, Borling is a strong supporter of the war in Iraq who is in favor of sending more troops to the country. He also advocates making one year of military service mandatory for most men and women between the ages of 18 and 26. Borling has recently said that workplace shooting rampages might be avoided if workers were allowed to carry weapons while on the job.
