2004 elections - U.S. Senate, Illinois

Dan Hynes - Democrat

Dan Hynes is Illinois Comptroller and a former health care attorney from Chicago. Coming off a landslide re-election in 2002, Hynes has taken an early lead for the Democrat nomination. He has lead handily in several polls and has received endorsements from more than 60 labor unions.

Hynes has criticized President Bush for his lack-luster economic performance: "Providing tax cuts for the wealthiest in society does not constitute a jobs creation plan," said Hynes. "President Bush has no plan to get the job done. Last month he was gloating about economic indicators and once again jumped the gun declaring 'mission accomplished.' His lack of a plan and misplaced priorities continue to fail us."

Selected Endorsements: Daily Southtown, Fraternal Order of Police, Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, Chicago Aldermen Thomas Allen, James Balcer, William Banks, Vi Daley, Margaret Laurino, Ted Matlak, Thomas Murphy, Patrick O'Connor, Frank Olivo, Virginia Rugai, Todd Stroger and Michael Zalewski. Congressmen Jerry Costello and Bill Lipinski, Hynes has received support from 85 of the state's 102 Democratic Party county chairs.
